Me and My Shadow A shadow is formed when a body or object blocks light. Artists study how light falls on things to create shadows. They use light in different ways in paintings, photographs, and other artwork. Come play shadow tag, make shadow animals, and make a shadow box. The program includes free time in the museum after the program. Groups may bring a bag lunch and eat in a designated area in the museum. Colors and Shapes Artists use colors, lines and shapes to make art. Would you like to make art of your own? Develop your creativity with the staff at the museum. Brownie "Owl" Overnight In a world filled with artificial light, come and try something different - a nighttime experience in a safe setting where FUN abounds. Bring your sense of adventure for an indoor program all about owls, an after-dark hike on the wildlife sanctuary, and then cozy up to sleep indoors in our visitor center. This program is set up for small troops looking for an overnight experience with an outdoor component. Girl Scout Day with the UMass Minutewomen Basketball Team Girl Scouts and troop leaders wearing some sort of identifying item (sash, uniform, etc) will be admitted for a special $2 admission. General Admission rates for all others will be $4 for adults and $2 for children. A special scout contest will be held to find the most creative banner or poster supporting the UMASS team … the winning troop will receive an edible prize from their concession stand! FebruaryNational Girls and Women in Sports Day Clinic Try new activities; discover your interests; find your potential. The Springfield College Athletic Department is inviting Girl Scouts to fun-filled, energy-packed, sports clinics for softball, indoor rock climbing and volleyball. No previous experience necessary. Girls will have lunch with Spirit, the college mascot, and are welcome to stay and cheer on the Springfield athletes as they compete in basketball and/or swim competitions. Winter Camp If you like Winterfest, give Winter Camp a try! With snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snow sculptures, and nature hikes, Winter Camp will prove to be the best cure for cabin fever. Participants will sleep in heated buildings, but should pack warm clothing and plan to do snowy, outdoor activities. This program is for girls only! Details:

Heart Power and Safety for Brownies Enjoy a fun day discovering how to take better care of yourself. Participants will find out which foods are healthy, discuss fire and bike helmut safety and learn what to do for choking. Girls will participate in the 'Don't Smoke' game and 'Jump for Your Heart.' They will tour an ambulance, learn to use a fire extinguisher and also try glo-germ. A light snack will be served. Details:

Girls will have a ball learning how to play tennis in an active, Girl Scout friendly environment. The staff at Ludlow Tennis Club will provide basic on-court instruction, designed to introduce this life-long sport to beginner players. Girls must wear sneakers (no black soled sneakers) and loose, comfortable clothing. Bring a tennis racquet if possible. Extra racquets will be available to borrow. Tennis balls will be provided. Wistariahurst Museum - Communication Arts Learn to communicate through different means: using Braille, images, words and sign. You will learn to convey messages using different ways of communication. Wistariahurst Museum, the restored home of a prominent Holyoke family, reflects the architecture and style of the mid-nineteenth century. Programs offered promote an appreciation of the culture of the times, as well as teach a variety of creative arts. Building Art Have fun exploring the galleries of the Worcester Art Museum and making art in our studios while working towards your Building Art Try-it. Our custom-tailored workshops include a 30-minute guided tour followed by a 90-minute creative studio activity. Look at architecture throughout the museum, experiment with different types of materials, then turn sketches for an ideal Girl Scout meeting into a 3-D model. Mystic Aquarium Overnight Girl Scouts of Central and Western Massachusetts has reserved the Mystic Aquarium just for us! Girl Scouts are invited to join us for this spectacular program! Our group is allowed into the aquarium after it closes on Saturday evening, at 7:00 pm. The aquarium staff will teach 5 different classes during the evening including things like Squid Dissection, Touch and Learn, Behind the Scenes Tour and a surprise class. Bedtime is about 10:30 pm with lights out at 11:00 pm. Morning wakeup is at 6:30 am. We will gather our belongings and bring them to our cars. They we’ll gather inside for a guided tour of the outdoor exhibits in the daylight. After the tour, everyone enjoys a continental breakfast of muffins, bagels, cold cereal, fresh fruit, orange juice, and coffee. Our group has to leave the aquarium at 8:30 am but we receive a special overnight patch, and get our hand stamped for free reentry that day. The aquarium reopens at 9:00 am. Details:

Rockin' Hockey Join the big time fun planned for Girl Scouts, their troops and families when the Springfield Falcons meet the Worcester Sharks. Girls are encouraged to make and bring banners saluting their facorite team. Girl Scouts will sing the National Anthem. There will be lots of rockin' fun before the game; participants have a chance to skate from 2-3 pm and enjoy special activities from 3-4 pm. Girl Sfouts will receive giveaway gifts. Wistariahurst Museum - Trash to Treasure Let your imagination run wild in this hands-on session with a local artist. Make bottle cap jewelry; cool necklaces fashioned from cast-off bottle toppers. Put together a brooch with loads of buttons, leftover paper clips and tin foil. Build the perfect treasure chest or jewelry box from reusable shoe boxes and go to the hilt with descoration using collage, wallpaper remnants, old ribbons, stamps, and beads, or stencil the box with skull n' crossbones. Use your creativity to turn castaways into fun and functional stuff. Girl Scout Day at Old Sturbridge Village This event is designed for all Girl Scouts that are interested in learning more about early 19th century American history. Inspired by Women’s History Month, Girl Scout Day will explore the everyday lives of early New England girls and women through demonstrations and performances! Meet two very inspirational and dynamic women, Lydia Maria Child and Mary Gove. In their own ways, both motivated positive changes in American women’s lives. Admission includes most Village activities and an Old Sturbridge Village patch. Also pre-register online for the Museum Education Girl Scout Hands-on Studios for an additional $3.00 per girl. These 50-minute activities have been designed to meet Brownies Try-Its and Junior Girl Scout Badge requirements. AprilEarth and Sky Join us at Arcadia to earn your Earth and Sky badge. We will take a close look at the soil and what lives within it with hand lens and insect boxes. Taking a hike we will look to see how wind and water has affected the soil, especially during this time of year when we often have flooding. We will keep an eye to the sky looking for early arrivals of butterflies and other insects as well as our returning migrant bird species. Finally, girls will make their own rock to take home. Experience daily Victorian life in hands-on segments. A sampling of activities includes Victorian fashion and hairstyles, the language and decoration of fans, garden and outdoor games, letter writing and diary passages, Victorian etiquette and entertainment, calling cards, and Victorian crafts. Girl Scouts will be divided into small groups to travel through the museum. Girls Golf Club Kick Off Meet local Golf Pros who will instruct clinics in Putting, Chipping and Full Swing. It's a fun filled morning introduction to the 2009 Summer Girls Golf Club program. Swim Safety Looking for a fun way to introduce your Brownie Girl Scouts to Water Safety … before summer swim activities start? Girls will work in small groups to review and learn water safety and swimming skills. The afternoon begins with one half-hour on "dry land", including water safety activities, games and role-play. Then they'll be in the pool and rotate through 4 stations where they'll develop and practice swimming, water safety, rescue and synchronized swimming skills. Free swim time is also included. Medieval Maidens The Middle Ages was an era of knights, fair ladies, princesses and castles. Girl swill learn about medieval times beyond the tales of adventure and make-believe and find out about the lives of girls and women during this time in history. Girls will still experience all the fun and discovery of the regular Camp-Ins except this night they get to bring their own adult pal! To register, use the GSCWM registration form. Puppets, Dolls and Plays There are so many kinds of art, such as painting and sculpture. Did you know that making puppets and dolls is an art, too? You can use them in plays and stories. Join the museum staff as you make yarn dolls, paper bag puppets, and your own play. The program includes free time in the museum after the program. Groups may bring a bag lunch and eat in a designated area in the museum. If the morning session fills, they will add an afternoon session.
